Recreation Manager - AgeCare Malaspina Care Residence

Pro Vita is looking for a Recreation Manager with a passion for the elderly to join our team to support our residents in Long Term Care in Nanaimo.

Location of Work: 100 Eleventh Street, Nanaimo, V9R 6R6
Term of Employment: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm

Recreation Manager Must Haves:

  • Post-Secondary degree in Therapeutic Recreation plus comprehensive knowledge of recreation and health care practices and techniques as they relate to long-term care, plus a minimum of 5 years recent experience in gerontology with 3 years management experience.
  • CPR & First Aid Certification.
  • Passes and complies with Ministry of Justice Criminal record Check upon hire and every 5 years thereafter. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbal and written.
  • Organized, dependable and flexible, with a positive attitude. 
  • Strong skills in decision-making, problem-solving, and communicating with various stakeholders from many backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to plan, set priorities and manage.

Recreation Manager Nice to Haves:

  • Eligible for membership in BC Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA).
  • Previous experience working with volunteers and the public in some capacity.
  • Basic to intermediate level computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Holds and Maintains a Valid Class 4 BC driver’s license.

Recreation Manager Responsibilities:

  • Promotes a culture of Person and Family-Centred Care (PFCC) by seeking a high level of input and engagement in the recreation programs design, implementation and review, through social assessment, Care Conferences and Resident/Family Council.
  • Promotes a culture of Safety as a Priority by demonstrating and supporting compliance with all safety policies and procedures including all health and safety standards such as infection control policies and procedures, and workplace safety.
  • Supervises the day to day work of the Recreation Team by performing such duties as coordinating and assigning program assignments, evaluating employee performance and determining related training, development and orientation requirements. 
  • Creates, organizes and implements therapeutic recreation programs such as arts and crafts, exercise, music, woodworking, cooking, baking, gardening, outings and other social programs.
  • Manages the Recreation departmental budgets. Purchases and inventories Recreation supplies and equipment accordingly.
  • Manages all records and documentation, including assisting with MDS data entry, in relation to recreation therapy programs, and residents progress within them. 
  • Teaches, directs and demonstrates activities to residents, staff, and volunteers.
  • Works within the interdisciplinary teams to identify and respond to residents', employees', and volunteers' needs. 
  • Responsible for training, supervision, and evaluation of Recreation Aides.
