Gemstone Care Centre is a beautiful, long term care home with lots of natural light, very cozy surroundings and overlooks the Thompson River in Kamloops . We are a special team who loves what we do and we like to have fun whenever we can.

As the Clinical Practice and Safety Manager you promote a culture of Safety as a Priority through education, monitoring and actions to create engagement as a routine part of service delivery in alignment with our five cultural pillars: Person and Family-Centred Care, Safety as a Priority, Quality and Innovation, A Great Place to Work, and Sustainability. You will work closely with the leadership team including the General Manager and the Care Manager in order to:

  • Promote a passion for learning and a culture of education and development;
  • Deliver the comprehensive education program (including orientation) in a creative, effective manner and consistent with affiliated sites of the Company;
  • Provide in-the-moment and unscheduled education to address learning gaps and/or incidents;
  • Monitor and ensure safety compliance with legislation and standards as well as Company policy;
  • Perform safety training, inspections, hazard identification, and audits including Workplace Violence Assessment and Hand Hygiene. Posts results and pursues improvements;
  • Participate on the Joint Occupational Health & Safety committee ensuring compliance with Workers’ Compensation Act and OH&S regulations. Monitor recover at work programs;
  • Review and follow-up on reports of near misses and incidents. Report incidents in compliance with legislation to Licensing and the Health Authority;
  • Use data from MDS RAI assessments to support risk analysis and decision making;
  • Understand the Company’s directive to act as needed on high risk or emergency safety issues without requiring advance authorization for the decision;

As the successful candidate, you are aligned with our values, can multi skill well and have exceptional communication skills. In addition, your interests, skills and education include:

  • A passion for geriatrics/long term care and best practices including Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA), PIECES and Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP);
  • A love of learning and growing others through education, coaching and role-modeling;
  • A confidence with technology and solid experience with e-charts/Point Click Care, MDS and CIHI;
  • A value of Risk Management and Work Safe practices to ensure safety as a priority; and
  • An understanding of the 24-7 services which requires a flexible mindset for leading, including shared management for weekend, evening, and night shift teams.

In addition, you also bring:

  • A minimum of five years recent experience in gerontology with comprehensive knowledge of nursing within long term care;
  • Previous management/leadership experience an asset;
  • Current registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM);
  • Preferred Certifications: Gentle Persuasive Approaches (GPA), PIECES, Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP);
  • Occupational First Aid (Level 1 or Level 2);
  • Intermediate computer skills (including MS Office, specifically Outlook, Excel and Word);
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language (both orally and written);
  • Good time management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities;
  • Good health and physically able to perform the duties of the role; and
