Recreation Manager - Gemstone Care Centre, Kamloops

Pro Vita Care Management is looking for a Recreation Manager with a passion for the elderly to join our team to support our residents in Kamloops Area.

• Shift: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8am - 4pm
• Salary: $80,000-$87,000 annually

Must-Haves (Mandatory Qualifications)

• Completion of a recognized Recreation Therapy Program, Activity Assistant diploma/certificate, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Minimum three (3) years of recent related recreation experience, preferably in long-term care or seniors’ care.
• Recent experience working with individuals living with dementia.
• Demonstrated experience supervising and managing employees, including recruitment, orientation, coaching, performance management, and training.
• Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to lead a collaborative, resident-focused recreation team.
• Strong organizational, planning, prioritization, and time-management skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with residents, families, employees, volunteers, community partners, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Ability to meet applicable immunization and tuberculosis requirements.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, including lifting, bending, standing, walking, and assisting with recreation activities as required.
• Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check for working with vulnerable adults.
• Valid Class 4 Driver’s Licence, if required by the facility.

Nice-to-Haves (Favoured Qualifications)

• Membership with a recognized recreation therapy or related professional association.
• Experience managing or coordinating volunteer programs and community partnerships.
• Experience developing recreation programs for seniors with diverse physical, cognitive, cultural, social, and spiritual needs.
• Knowledge of Person and Family-Centred Care principles.
• Experience with quality improvement, program audits, accreditation, and performance measures.
• Experience managing departmental budgets, purchasing, and expenditures.
• Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their roles in interdisciplinary resident care.
• Food Safe Level 1, First Aid/CPR, and Serving It Right certification where applicable to facility programming.

Recreation Manager Responsibilities

• Lead the Recreation Department and ensure recreation services support residents’ physical, emotional, social, spiritual, cultural, and cognitive wellbeing through a Person and Family-Centred Care approach.
• Plan, develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve recreation programs based on resident interests, abilities, needs, and feedback.
• Ensure recreation assessments, care plans, progress documentation, and other required resident records are completed accurately and kept current.
• Participate in interdisciplinary care conferences and collaborate with other departments to support residents’ recreation and quality-of-life needs.
• Lead and supervise the Recreation Team, including recruitment, scheduling, orientation, training, coaching, performance evaluation, performance management, and discipline as required.
• Provide leadership, mentorship, and direction to Recreation employees and promote a respectful, collaborative, and accountable work environment.
• Oversee volunteer services and community partnerships, including recruitment, screening, orientation, scheduling, training, recognition, and compliance requirements.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations, schools, cultural groups, and other external organizations to expand recreation opportunities for residents.
• Ensure recreation programming reflects residents’ diverse cultural, spiritual, social, and individual preferences.
• Oversee recreation calendars, newsletters, special events, program communications, and other promotional materials.
• Establish and monitor recreation service standards, performance measures, program outcomes, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Conduct or oversee quality audits of recreation programs, address identified gaps, and implement appropriate improvement plans.
• Respond to resident and family feedback, concerns, and complaints relating to recreation services and ensure appropriate follow-up.
• Ensure compliance with applicable safety, infection prevention and control, workplace health and safety, licensing, and organizational policies.
• Develop and manage the Recreation Department budget, monitor expenditures, approve or coordinate purchasing, and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and value.
• Ensure appropriate recreation equipment, supplies, transportation, and other resources are available to support programming.
• Arrange and oversee resident outings, transportation, special events, and associated logistics, including mobility assistance where required.
• Work collaboratively as a member of the site Leadership Team and provide regular updates on recreation performance, priorities, risks, and improvement initiatives.
• Support accreditation requirements and organizational quality initiatives applicable to Recreation Services.
• Maintain current knowledge of recreation practices in seniors’ care and identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.
• Perform other related duties as required to support Recreation Services and the overall operation of the facility.
